About Comorian Culture

Comoros is an African island nation composed of volcanic islands nestled in the Indian Ocean. As a result, its culture and customs are shaped by deeply-rooted African and Islamic traditions. In particular, East African ‘Swahili’ culture has been one of the most significant influences on Comorian customs. Religion plays an important part in daily life, with Sunni Islam found among the majority of the population. Family also plays a vital role in Comorian society and people are highly devoted to their extended families as well as to their faith. Leisure activities often involve sharing traditional foods with close friends and family.  Comorian cuisine draws heavily on local seafood, coconuts and spices such as cardamom, clove and pepper.  Visiting mosques for Friday prayers is very common, as are regular informal gatherings among friends for recreation and relaxation. Music holds an important place within the culture, with local compositions utilizing both rhythms from the mainland African continent as well as neighboring Arab nations such as Oman and Yemen. Overall, the richness of cultural expression reflects a unique union between both Africa and Arab nations.

About Comoros

Comoros is an island nation located in the Indian Ocean off the eastern coast of Africa between Madagascar and Mozambique. It declared independence from France in 1975 and formed a federal union of four islands - Grande Comore, Moheli, Anjouan, and Mayotte. Historically, Comoros has been a melting pot of cultures. Inhabited by Arab traders who brought Islam to the islands centuries ago, Comoros was colonized by the French in the 19th century. Since its independence, an often unstable political landscape has posed significant challenges for a unified government supported by all inhabitants. Despite this instability, Comorians are connected with each other through mutual needs and day-to-day cooperation. Evidence of this connection is seen even today through language – Comorian, Arabic and French are all spoken by various communities on all four islands.  This comradery with one another  continues to support Comorians as they strive to thrive as an independent nation and remain culturally diverse yet harmoniously united.
