About Venetian Gondoliers

Gondoliers are a common sight in Venice, a city without roads. For centuries, these skilled boatmen have ferried tourists and locals alike through the city’s canals, offering a unique view of the city. Though gondolas are often associated with Venice, they originated in Syria. The first gondolas were brought to Venice in the 11th century by Venetian merchants who were impressed by their exotic design. Over the next few centuries, gondolas became increasingly popular in Venice, as they were well-suited to the city’s narrow canals. Today, there are around 400 licensed gondoliers in the city. Each one of them must undergo years of training before being allowed to navigate the city’s waters. A ride in a gondola is not only a unique experience, but also a glimpse into Venice’s rich history.

About Italy

Italy is a country with a rich and storied history dating back to antiquity. The first inhabitants of Italy were the Etruscans, who settled on the Italian Peninsula in the Bronze Age. The Etruscans were a major influence on Ancient Rome and their culture can still be seen in many place names and ruins in the country. Around 600 BC, the Romans began to rise to power. The Roman Empire would go on to alter the course of history for both the Eastern and Western worlds. For Centuries, the Romans controlled much of Europe, Africa and Asia. Rome was eventually sacked by invading barbarian tribes in 476 AD, leading to the fall of the empire. During the Middle Ages, Italy was divided into many small city-states. This period saw the rise of powerful families such as the Medici in Florence and the Borgias in Rome. The Renaissance began in Italy in the 14th century, spreading throughout Europe and ushering in a new era of artistic achievement. In 1861, Italy united to form the Kingdom of Italy and after World War II became a republic. The country has been home to some of the world's most influential artists, writers, and thinkers. From Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo to Dante and Marco Polo, Italy has produced some of history's most significant figures. While today, Italy is renowned for its art, food, fashion, and architecture, the legacy of the Roman Empire can still be seen in the country's many ancient ruins and historical landmarks.
