About The Maasai

The Maasai are an ethnic group native to southern Kenya and northern Tanzania. Living mainly within the expansive Great Rift Valley, they are semi-nomadic pastoralists who take advantage of the region's arid climate to raise their main livestock like cows, sheep, and goats. Historically speaking, much of the Maasai culture centers around land ownership and sharing. This often manifests in rituals known as 'jumping of cattle' or 'ole ashito', that symbolically pass on ownership between family members on certain occasions. They have their own language called Maa alongside Swahili which is widely spoken throughout East Africa. The Maasai tribe is also best known for their vibrant traditional clothing—predominantly made up of red cloth with intricate beading along its edges—which serves as a form of identity and protection against predators in its wild environment. The Maasai remain key stewards and conservationists of preservable areas across Kenya.

About Kenya

Kenya is a country located in Eastern Africa, on the Indian Ocean. It has a long and complex history that dates back over 1 million years, with evidence of human presence as far back as 200,000 BC. During pre-colonial times, Kenyan territory was divided among numerous ethnic groups who maintained distinct lifestyles and cultures. In 1895, Kenya came under British rule, held by the East African Company until 1920 and then continued by the British Colonial Government until independence in 1963. After independence the country has faced numerous political challenges, notably during Kenyatta's presidency in the 80s when there were considerations of a shift to an autocratic regime. Despite these difficulties Kenya has become a democracy and is now one of the most economically prosperous nations in sub-Saharan Africa and remains an important cultural and economic hub for the region.
