About Intore Dance

Intore Dance is a traditional Rwandan dance historically performed by tutsi warriors. It is characterized by powerful, strong movements that demonstrate their strength and courage in battle. Common steps include stamping and leaping one foot at a time to the rhythm of the drums. Performers often dress in colorful tassels, sashes, and billowing blankets adorned with cowrie shells, beads and tassels which signify wealth and prestige. They also wear distinctive lion's mane crests atop their heads for protection in battle. Intore Dance celebrates tutsi bravery as well as honoring royal Rwandan kings during important occasions.

About Rwanda

Rwanda is a small, landlocked country in east-central Africa that was first settled in the 8th Century. It is comprised of three main ethnic groups, hutu, tutsi and twa. During the early 1990s, tensions between hutu and tutsi groups erupted into civil war and resulted in the Rwandan Genocide in 1994. The hutu-led Rwandan government executed close to one million of its citizens – mostly tutsi – before international pressure forced them to withdraw. Despite this tragic event in Rwandan history, the country has since had dramatic social and economic development. In fact, it is officially considered to be the safest country in Africa. It has emerged as an economic leader on the continent with a focus on information technology infrastructure and human capital development initiatives. This incredible transformation stands as a testament to Rwanda's resilience and shows what we can achieve if we learn from our past mistakes.
