About Swiss Yodeling

Swiss Yodeling is an alpine folk style of vocalization with roots in the pastures of southern Switzerland. It developed as a way for farmers to communicate with each other during the long days of herding, and has since become a beloved type of folk music throughout Switzerland and the world. Swiss Yodeling is typically rooted in simple melodies that are accompanied by a rhythmic yodel, which can range from short, fast “yee-hoo” sounds all the way up to long, melodic “ooh-eh” syllables. The accuracy and complexity of Swiss Yodeling melodies vary depending on the individual yodeler's talents but are always a delight to listen to. Alpine folklore dances often accompany traditional Swiss Yodeling songs and these dances employ clapping, stomping and sweeping arm motions that provide further depth to this vibrant musical culture.

About Switzerland

Nestled in the mountains and valleys of central Europe, Switzerland has a long and storied history. After occupation by Rome, which had a lasting influence on Swiss culture and law, there were a vast array of feudal lorddoms and divided states until they formed an alliance that was recognized by the Holy Roman Empire in 1291. This formed the nucleus of what we know today as Switzerland, who would later gain independence through their neutrality in the Napoleonic wars. In modern times, this bold step towards self-governance has given rise to Switzerland’s iconic image: peaceful and neutral with a commitment to democracy.  Known as ‘the land of four languages’, the nation is home to numerous customs, traditions and nationalities blended together. German, French, Italian, and Romansh are all official languages of the country spoken in different geographic regions. Its economy largely operates through trade and banking, which has led to it having one of the highest GDPs per capita in the world. Tourism is another important industry, heavily focused on ski resorts, alpine vistas, art galleries and museums. Switzerland prides itself on its rich cultural heritage including folklore, yodeling, Swiss brass bands, and Alpine music.
